Salt Lake City is the capital and the
most populated city in Utah. The city was founded
by settlers from the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) in 1847,
when their prophet Brigham Young guided the
group from Missouri west to find a sanctuary
from persecution. The city lies in a valley
almost surrounded by mountains, with the remnants
of prehistoric Lake Bonneville (Great Salt Lake)
as its major feature. Though the valley was
bleak with just sagebrush and lizards as inhabitants,
the settlers saw the value in staying. With
the Jordan River flowing through the valley,
fresh water was available and soon canals were
dug and crops planted. Many more Mormon pioneers
soon filled the valley, with all aspects of
the community including politics, economy, and
family life all tied to the church. By the 1870's
numerous other pioneers had moved to the valley,
and by the 1900's Salt Lake City had transitioned
into a typical American city.
Visitors to the Salt Lake Valley area have
numerous opportunities for a vast variety of
activities. Within the city, visit Historic
Temple Square, site of the Tabernacle (home
to the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir), the Family
History Library, and various historic buildings
belonging to the church. Cultural facilities
include the Abravanel (Symphony) Hall, Utah
State History Museum, museums of fine arts and
natural history, and numerous theaters and performance
centers. The University of Utah sits on the
"bench" of the valley with 1500 acres of educational,
athletic and cultural opportunities. The State
Capitol building also sits on the bench and
overlooks the whole Salt Lake valley. Hogle
Zoo, State historic and pioneer parks and farms,
Tracy Aviary, and the Bingham Canyon Copper
Mine are all popular with visitors and locals
alike.
Salt Lake is also host to numerous events throughout
the year. Festivals range from those that feature
the cultures of the area’s ethnic populations,
film and art festivals, rodeos, and the County
and State Fairs. Celebratory parades range from
Gay Pride to St. Patrick's Day and the Days
of '47. Athletics and sports range from the
numerous youth and club tournaments, the Utah
Winter Games and marathons, to professional
teams of basketball, soccer, baseball, ice hockey,
and auto and motorcycle racing.
Golfers, skiers, runners, mountain and road
bike enthusiasts all find numerous trails, courses,
and runs from which to choose. Nine Mountain
Resorts are in close proximity for snow sports
and mountain biking and hiking. Rocky canyons
attract hikers and climbers. Numerous golf courses
often remain open year round for the serious
or casual golfer.
Known as the Crossroads of the West, Salt Lake
City also provides visitors a base from which
they can visit Utah's famed Mountain Resorts,
OR travel to one of the West's National Parks
or Monuments. Within a 4-5 hour drive, one can
be in the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Zion, Bryce,
Canyonlands, Arches, Monument Valley, Nevada's
Great Basin, or Colorado's Ancestral Puebloan
sites.
